The iconic 'Up' chair was designed in 1969 by Gaetano Pesce for B & B Italia, unconventionally produced from a single block of moulded rubber foam - it has no internal support or frame work, yet the structure is both dense and buoyant and will retain its shape. Apparently depicting an ancient female fertility form, the ottoman - originally tethered to the chair, is Pesces' suggestion of the "confines" and self "imprisonment" of women. This example is without the original jersey covering and has had a latex spray to protect the foam. The rubber tie for the ottoman is missing.
