Ormolu and Marble Clock by Millet et Cie
Constructed in white Carrara marble and gilt bronze; the rectangular form base having bowed ends, rises from gilt toupie feet, and has opposed gilt sphinxes and gilt bronze foliate mounts to the facia; the two train clock, with an eight day movement, numbered ‘4522’on the backplate and marked ‘Made in France’, strikes the hours on a bell; the circular enamel face depicts the hours in Roman numerals, interspersed with gilt fleur-de-lys symbols, and is flanked by addorsed putti holding trumpets, with musical instruments at hand, including a tambourine, Pan pipes and a thyrsus; atop, a third putti wields cymbals. Signed to the face, and in the bronze, ‘Millet à Paris’.

Biography
Founded in 1853 at 11 rue Jacques-Coeur, and, after 1902, Boulevard Beaumarchais, and described themselves as furnishers of ‘meubles, bronzes d’art, genre ancien et moderne’, according to their trade card; winners of a Gold Medal at the 1889 l’Exposition Universelle, and at the 1900 show, a Grand Prix for their efforts. In Denise Ledoux-Lebard’s ‘Mobilier Français du XIXe Siecle’ published 1989 records inter alia of the firm’s output, a cartel clock in the Louis XVIth manner.
