Vega Sicilia was created in 1864 by Bordeaux-trained Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who had inherited a large estate from his father. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and (surprisingly) Pinot Noir to produce brandy and ratafia. Nothing of distinction was made here until 1915, when the then owner Domingo Txomin Garramiola made the first vintage of Vega Sicilia and Valbuena.
Today Vega Sicilia makes three wines. Valbuena 5º is made from younger vines and is aged for less time than the Único; Reserva Especial is a blend of several vintages to create a house style rather than to reflect any given year; finally, the flagship Único comes from the oldest vines on the estate and is aged in wood for several years.
