DBS Superleggera Range

DBS Superleggera Range
ASTON MARTIN’S NEW GRAND TOURER. LIGHTER AND MORE POWERFUL THAN THE VANQUISH S
Replacing the retired Vanquish S and relaunching the DBS name, first coined for the 1967 model, the car brings with it over 50 years of Aston Martin heritage and the ‘DB’ moniker of former owner David Brown, together with lightweight construction and powerful engine’.
Unquestionably, DBS Superleggera sits at the pinnacle of the Aston Martin production range. It is both a shining light expressing the most beautiful automotive art and, at the same time, a dark and menacing shadow of brutal, unequivocal strength. It is this fine blend of seemingly opposing traits that makes the DBS Superleggera the absolute Aston Martin.

DESIGN
The new DBS Superleggera is designed to a specific brief as a high performance, lightweight GT car: it’s more than just replacing the Vanquish. Its low position and equally low ground clearance clearly establishes its performance-oriented character. Side louvres and its powerful rear enhance its supercar persona.
The aluminium and carbon fibre body sports a bold front grille with new headlights and tail-lights to help differentiate it from the DB11. A front splitter, extensive underbody aerodynamics, a rear diffuser and a new Aeroblade II rear wing helps give the DBS Superleggera its good looks.
Design is fundamental to overall performance: the aerodynamics generate the most downforce of any road-going Aston Martin, with 60kg at the car’s front and 120kg at the rear. A new quad exhaust system is tuned to produce a particularly resonant sound.
Its interior, while adopting the styling of the DB11, features touches such as dark chrome bezels on the center console and chopped carbon fiber on the door trim.
PERFORMANCE
The fastest and most powerful road-going car that Aston Martin has yet produced, the DBS Superleggera achieves a 0 to 62 mph time of 3.4 seconds, a 0 to100mph in 6.4 seconds, with a top speed of 211 mph.
The DBS Superleggera has a dry weight of 1693kg. It sits on bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres, with 21” wheels. The turbo-charged 5.2-litre V12 engine has been reworked to produce 715 bhp and generates 664lb ft of torque, available at 1800-5000rpm.
SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY
Extensive tuning work has been carried out on the ESP and traction control to manage the car’s very quickly available and significant torque. Experienced drivers can enjoy the playful nature of the car with feedback allowing the driver to make the right decisions on applying throttle or backing off, ensuring it is also an approachable car for all drivers.
Based on the DB11 chassis, the rear-wheel-drive DBS Superleggera sports a new transmission and gearbox to handle the extra power and torque. It features switchable adaptive dampers, dynamic torque vectoring and a stability system that can be switched off in its entirety.

ASTON MARTIN DBS SUPERLEGGERA VOLANTE
211 MPH VOLANTE DELIVERS THE ULTIMATE OPEN-AIR ASTON MARTIN EXPERIENCE
Though based on the glorious DBS V12, the flagship DBS Superleggera Coupé, released in 2018, is even more dramatic in both lines and performance. Now it’s joined by a convertible stablemate, the DBS Superleggera Volante. Open-top motoring doesn’t get any more thrilling than this.
PERFORMANCE
The DBS Superleggera Volante’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 produces 715bhp and 900Nm of torque, rocketing the Aston from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds and onto a remarkable 211mph. 0-100 miles an hour takes 6.7 seconds. For optimum balance, the eight-speed ZF transmission is mounted at the rear via a carbon-fibre propshaft and transaxle. Adaptive software gauges the conditions, along with the driver’s demands, to ensure the car is in exactly the right gear at the right time.
One of the joys of open top motoring is the aural experience of a powerful high-performance engine and the engineers at Gaydon have given the DBS Superleggera Volante a glorious-sounding quad exhaust system. Thoughtfully, there’s also a ‘quiet start’ mode for those whose neighbours don’t appreciate the sound of a thoroughbred Aston Martin clearing its throat in the early morning. The driver has a choice of GT, Sport and Sport Plus modes, giving the DBS Superleggera Volante a progressively more aggressive feel, with an appropriate exhaust soundtrack to match.
DESIGN
The DBS Superleggera Volante is another stunning piece of automotive design from Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman and his team. The distinctive Aston Martin grille has taken on an even more predatory air, all the better to gulp down vast quantities of cooling air for the potent 5.2-litre turbocharged V8 under the carbon-fibre clamshell bonnet, and it is flanked by a pair of inlets designed to improve airflow over the brakes and around the front wheels. As with the Coupé, the Volante features a ‘curlicue’ behind the front wheel arch that allows air to escape and flow smoothly along the car’s flanks. A double diffuser at the rear allows air to exit cleanly and neutralise lift as efficiently as possible. Aston Martin’s distinctive ‘Airblade’ rear spoiler has had to be repositioned relative to the Coupé, yet the net effect is that the Volante develops 177kg of downforce, just 3kg less than the Coupé.
Inside, cossetted by Aston Martin’s finest hand-craftsmanship, the driver and passenger enjoy state of the art TFT screens; one 12" unit provides the instrumentation and there’s a second 8" display for infotainment, including satellite navigation. Infotainment can be controlled by gesture, voice, or letter recognition via the touchpad. The roof has eight layers for year-round usability and sound insulation and takes 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close. It can be operated from inside or remotely within a two-metre radius of the car. When folded, the roof’s low stack height of 260mm gives the rear a seamless profile. The DBS Superleggera Volante is a flagship convertible that looks equally sensational with the hood up or down.
VERDICT
Aston Martin made it their aim to retain the coupe’s powerful dynamics, aggressive poise and astonishing performance, yet add the sensory dimension that only a convertible can provide. Mission accomplished; the DBS Superleggera Volante is the fastest convertible in Aston Martin history, as jaw-droppingly beautiful as it is thrilling to drive.
